Phil & Monique: Developments
FADE IN:
INT. AAM CONFERENCE IN DENVER - CONVENTION CENTER CAFE - DAY
Waiting in line are MONIQUE, exhibition developer wise beyond her years, and PHIL, anxious independent museum consultant. They have been joined by SVEN, enthusiastic curator.
SVEN: So what do you do?
MONIQUE: I am a developer who would rather be a developer, and I work with people from development, who get funding from developers in development to make developments. [Sips matcha.]
SVEN: Uh, what did that mean?
PHIL: Don’t encourage her.
MONIQUE: Good question! Museum people are separated by a common language.
SVEN: We are?
PHIL: Don’t say I didn’t warn you.
MONIQUE: We are. For example, the word “develop” means so many things at this conference, we’re all confused and we don’t realize it.
SVEN: Really?
PHIL: Here we go.
MONIQUE: Really. The human version of what I said before was “I plan museum exhibits, but I’d love to code with computers, and I work with fundraisers who get money from real estate people in the speculation business to fund new museums.”
SVEN: Oh.
PHIL: [Sighs.]
MONIQUE: See? That one word “develop” means so many things in our business, we can’t communicate with each other.
SVEN: I guess better communication just takes time to … develop.
PHIL: …
MONIQUE: Hey Phil, I like this guy. [Sips matcha.]
FADE OUT.
