The Personal Testimony Trick

Religion. Politics. Gender.

Discuss.

Controversial topics are part of the museum mission. And they attract public interest. But divisive themes can also cause bad PR, and jeopardize the mission.

How can an exhibition court controversy with less risk?

One approach is the personal testimony trick:

  • Avoid the “museum voice” taking a stance on the issue in labels or videos by staff. Instead, only ask provocative but even-handed questions.

  • Record third parties (not museum staff) voicing their opinion in their own words. Video, audio, text, whatever works. Exhibit these.

  • They can be experts, but everyday people will be less of a target.

  • Whatever viewpoint is the strongest, include both opposing and unsure views.

  • Another option: visitors leave behind their own answers. A video booth is great. Post-its work too.

Here’s the thing:
Provocative themes force exhibitions into a tight spot. Try the personal testimony trick. Keep the museum voice neutral, and collect the honest opinions of others to express the ideas.

Warmly,
Jonathan
