8 Ways to Make an Intro Theater

Intro theaters: a classic technique for many reasons. So what kinds are there?

To wrap up Intro Theater Week, here are 8 approaches to making one for your next project:

1. A Great Little Theater
It doesn’t have to be fancy. A nice little room with a good AV system will do.

2. Path as Theater
Audiences don’t have to sit. Your intro theater can be the pathway into your exhibition.

3. Live Actor
Uncommon but excellent. A live host or actor is impossible to ignore.

4. Unexpected Image Location
Visitors expect an image straight ahead. Put it elsewhere. Up. Down. Both sides.

5. Immersive Images
Visitors expect a single screen. Wrap them in it instead.

6. Multi-Sensory Space
Visitors expect audio plus visual. Give them one more sense: smell, touch, maybe even taste.

7. Narrative-Driven Environment
Design a space that reflects the exhibition content.

And last …

8. Portal Reveal
Works. Every. Time. A wall of the room, ideally the screen, opens to reveal the gallery.

Here’s the thing:
Intro theaters deserve a second look — and the possibilities are endless.
