What’s “LBE”?
Don’t know the term “LBE”? No worries. It’s probably something you make for a living anyway.
“LBE” stands for “location based entertainment”. LBE is any form of entertainment outside the home, based in a particular location.
The term grew over the past decade, as the entertainment industry looked for new ways to sell intellectual property through a new channel: physical space.
Think pop-up stores to promote a new film, immersive installations to get shoppers back in malls, or ultra-expensive hotels like a far-away galaxy.
But there are classic examples that fall under this new term: mini-golf, theme parks, cruise ships …
… museums.
We talk a lot about our cultural locations providing inspiration, education and the like. But there is another word for content experiences people enjoy during leisure time. whether fictional or reality-based.
It starts with an E.
Here’s the thing:
We might not realize it, but we are probably all in the location-based entertainment business.
Warmly,
Jonathan
