How About a Hologram?
It’s not an exhibition brainstorming meeting until someone yells out:
How about a hologram?
But ironically, nearly every “hologram” you will ever see in person, or in a movie, or in a Google search … isn’t one.
A real hologram is a photograph taken with laser light, which is then printed and lit with a laser (or very focused spotlight). Forgery-resistant documents sometimes have crude versions of these. Real holograms aren’t common, but good ones are amazing. More on that science here if you’re brave.
Almost every other kind of “hologram” isn’t one. For example:
> The classic pepper’s ghost trick. Great when done well, but not a hologram.
> Spinning LED fans. May I never see another.
> Projecting a flat visual onto “holopro” translucent film.
> Flat projections onto mist or smoke, aka “poor man’s R2D2”.
> Those “3D” LED billboards. They’re just anamorphic videos.
Here’s the thing:
It’s not an exhibition brainstorm until somebody yells out, “How about a hologram?”
But most things called that … aren’t.
Warmly,
Jonathan

MtM Word of the Day:
Relative humidity {RH}. A measure of water vapor in the air, expressed as a percentage between 0% and 100%. RH describes how much actual water vapor the air holds, relative to the maximum amount the air could hold at that temperature. Warm air can hold more water vapor than cold air.

Deadline Coming Up:
Have you worked on a great exhibition or experience design project recently? The SEGD Global Design Awards late deadline is this week, on Friday, 28 February. Final deadline is 15 March. “Since 1987, the SEGD Global Design Awards have set the standard of excellence for experiential design, honoring work that connects people to place.” (And I’m not just saying that because I’m the Jury Chair this year.)

Going to MAAM Building Museums?
I’ll be in St. Louis 5-7 March (soon!) and I’ll be part of the first keynote on Thursday, 6 March. If you’ll be there, drop me a line, I’d love to meet up IRL.
(Yeah, there sure are a lot of footers in MtM emails these days. Don’t worry, it won’t last!)
