Exhibits … of Exhibits?

I’m curious to know what words we all use to refer to the individual parts of an exhibition.

Let’s say we have a large exhibition, something that would take a visitor more than an hour to visit in earnest. Imagine it’s 10,000 square feet. And it’s essentially one big open space, something grand.

Now, within that overall space, there are individual discreet experiences. Perhaps a platform serves to group a series of display elements. Perhaps a visually transparent wall or grille identifies another area. Perhaps an element hanging from the ceiling makes it clear that another set of experiences belong together. And these are all in that one larger space.

OK, so what do we generically call each of those areas? And at a smaller scale, the things inside them?

Zones?
Stations?
Elements?
Modules?
Areas?
Exhibits?

In my practice, we avoid that last choice, because we end up with an exhibit … of exhibits. That doesn’t help, because it’s always unclear what we’re discussing.

Here’s the thing:
What term do you use for the zones, stations, elements, modules, or areas that make up your exhibitions?

Hit REPLY and let me know!

Warmly,
Jonathan
