LBE
Don’t know the term “LBE”? No worries.
It’s just that … you probably make it for a living.
“LBE” stands for “location based entertainment.” LBE is any form of entertainment outside the home, based in a particular location.
The term grew over the past decade, as the entertainment industry looked for new ways to sell intellectual property through a new channel: physical space.
Think pop-up stores to promote a new film, immersive installations to get shoppers back in malls, or ultra-expensive hotels like a far-away galaxy (R.I.P.).
But there were already classic examples falling under this new term: mini-golf, theme parks, cruise ships … museums.
We talk a lot about our cultural locations providing inspiration, education, and the like. But there is another word for content experiences people enjoy during leisure time. whether fictional or reality-based. That word is entertainment.
Here’s the thing:
We might not realize it, but in the grand scheme of things, we are probably all in the location-based entertainment business.
Warmly,
Jonathan
